My Protector
Gouache on wooden panel
18.5″ x 14.5″
2024
This artwork serves as an allegory of protection. Whether in the form of a person, an object, a concept or a behaviour, the protector can both help or harm its subject. The union of snake and cactus create a being that is both threatening and beautiful, reflecting the duality of its role.
The woman lies in a fetal position, in the midst of her protector’s embrace. While the outward pointing thorns ward off danger, the same thorns fold back inwards. The thicker the layers of safety, the harder it becomes to break away.

Pithos
Gouache on wooden panel
11″ x 14″
2024

I created Pithos while in Crete, Greece, during a residency in the summer of 24. After spending some days visiting the city of Heraklion and its many relics, the symbol of the Pithos stuck with me for some time afterwards.
Pithoi were large clay jars often used to carry olive oil or wine in antiquity, and can still be seen around today, mainly as decorative pieces. Considering they were roughly the size of a person, they were sometimes used as funeral urns as well.
Imagining a person crammed in this reversed egg-shaped jar evoked in me the image of a return to the womb of sorts. Perhaps the death of a person a few thousands of years ago fed the soil for plants to grow today.
